Do you think that I could? (Hugo-winner Seanan McGuire, here on LJ) and Sexism: A revealing experiment (Nature; behind pay-wall, but they give you reading access - just click "ReadCube Access*"; again something I'll unfortunately have to take into account in my life and work). Yes, they are all about feminism. If you feel offended, you can just avoid clicking. Or perhaps re-think why you are here at all.
- In programming, there is a thing called a spaceship operator: <=>. Spaceship operator! How cool is that?
- Things people get patents for and which make me go all o_O
- John Scalzi on his A Personal History of Libraries. This sums up a lot of FEELINGS I have for libraries. I needed them as a kid like breathing. I don't use them now (at list not the public ones and even for work it's mainly online access to magazines that I need), but I'm going to fight for the till the bitter end. Btw., that there are no used books and that libraries don't work as well with ebooks is one of my main objective objections against ebooks.
- I don't know anything about Australian politics and whether I support this woman at all, but this speech is a work of a rhetorical genius. Makes me thing of who of my characters (I still write in my head even if not on paper) could pull that of. J., most likeky J., even if I would love to see Alina do it.
- More cool terminology: in coronal seismology (i.e. a way to study the solar corona), there is something called sausage modes. Yes, it is true - it's there in papers (I could link a few more as proof, but I don't want to bore you - also no need to click if you don't happen to be a hardcore physicist). And there still is the Swiss Cheese universe.
- Astronomy students say the strangest things! - and if you scroll down you'll see that so do the professionals (links to other subjects are very welcome).

Das Buch habe ich nicht gelesen, kommt aber mal auf meine Liste! Ich habe aber leider genug Originalstudien gelesen und genug mit anderen Frauen gesprochen (sowohl in meiner Rolle als Frauenbeauftragte als eben auch einfach von Frau zu Frau) :(
Kann ich nur empfehlen, das Buch :)
Wenn ich so darüber nachdenke, hab ich bisher aber häufiger Männer "overdressed" (in Anzügen und so) auf Konferenzen gesehen, Frauen sind da eher halt "schick", aber nicht so over the top.
Ähm ja, das ist jetzt etwas lang geworden. :D Aber darüber hab ich tatsächlich intensiver nachgedacht vor meiner Entscheidung. Wie hältst du es denn damit?
Ich habe das Gefühl, ich bin gerade noch ein zu kleiner Fisch, wie es in dem Artikel steht I see grad students of all gender identities wearing them here. But when I went into post-doc - wenn ich mir die Frauen anschaue, die eine Stufe höher sind, merke ich schon einen Unterschied. Bzw. habe ich auf den nicht wirklich ausgepasst, bis der Artikel mich drauf gebracht hat und dann bin ich mal alle möglichen Leute im Kopf durchgegangen. Und hmmm, ja. Doch. Es ist nicht unbedingt die gleichen Dinge, die im Artikel beschrieben werden, aber ich merke einen Unterschied. Nicht so sehr innerhalb der Astrophysik selbst auf Konferenzen, aber wenn es mal um irgendwelche Uni-Gremien geht. Oder um öffentliche Auftritte.
Und ich habe bisher nicht so die Ahnung, wie es für mich wird. Kommt sicherlich auch auf die Gruppe dann an.
Ich glaube, ich würde einen Vortrag nicht in einem nerdigen Shirt halten können (wobei ich es nicht falsch finde, aber es würde sich für mich in den meisten Fällen einfach falsch anfühlen). Aber definitiv auch nicht in Kostüm, da würde ich mir ja voll verkleidet vorkommen. Ich besitze so was ja nicht mal.
Also ich finde ja, dass sich SOWAS eigentlich niemand erlauben sollte - egal welches Geschlecht. Weil DAS find ich tatsächlich unprofessionell. :/ Ich hab den Gammellook zwar auch professionalisiert, aber so würd ich nichtmal in den Supermarkt gehen! Aber natürlich stimmt es, dass sowas bei einem Mann wohl eher nachgesehen wird als bei einer Frau. Das ist echt traurig...
Und wenn sich ein nerdiges Shirt bei einem Vortrag für dich falsch anfühlt, solltest du auch keines tragen. :) Ich wollte meine Art und Weise, damit umzugehen, auf keinen Fall als das nonplusultra darstellen, ich hoffe, das kam nicht so rüber!
Wobei mir im nachhinein auch aufgefallen ist, dass ich eigentlich echt gut Reden habe: Ich strebe ja keine wissenschaftliche Karriere an, von daher kann es mir gleich zweimal egal sein, wie ich mit meiner Kleidung rüberkomme. Wenn jemand aber ernst genommen werden möchte und tatsächlich die Kleidung eine wichtige Rolle spielt, bleibt einer wohl aber gar nichts anderes übrig, als sich anzupassen... :(
Neee, so kam es gar nicht rüber, keine Sorge! Aber es hat mich auf jeden Fall zum Nachdenken gebracht. Ich hatte auch mal ein Gespräche mit jemanden, der um einiges weiter ist als ich (feste Stelle + Habil), der gemeint hatte, er hält seine Talks eigentlich meist im Anzug, auch wenn es heißt einer von den zwei Leuten unter 200 im Anzug zu sein. Finde ich alles total spannend! Ich glaube, es gibt einfach so was wie "Power-Kleidung", in der mensch sich richtig toll und professionell vorkommt. Zumindest ist das bei mir so. Nur dass es bei jedem etwas anderes ist.
Die Sache mit Langzeitkarriereplanung könnte aber tatsächlich reinspielen :( Aber da muss ich evtl. selbst noch länger darüber nachdenken, wie das eigentlich bei mir ist.
Ich klick mich auch noch grad durch deine Linkliste mit den Artikeln, kann etwas dauern, ist ja alles in Englisch.:) Interessant!
Freut mich auf jeden Fall, dass es dir gefällt. Der Comic hat mich auch voll glücklich gemacht, als ich es das erste mal gelesen habe. Ich hoffe, ihr "großes" Buch, wird mal übersetzt ...
But the problem is that to read the book one needs an e-reader (or constant access to a computer). And I still don't see poor people, especially poor children, getting one. The cheapest kindle is atm at 80€, the cheapest other I could find at 60€, but the social welfare for a kid between 14 and 17 around 290€ per month.
